A reader asked about handling "intimate" scenes at an audition. The letter contained so many relevant questions that I have broken the note into sections and answered each separately. Here goes:
"When you are auditioning for a part in a play and there's a 'love scene' and the script says that you kiss, etc., do I go with the flow and kiss the reading partner or just read the words and assume the action will come later? - Jessica"

Kissing and Gone with the Wind
Thanks Chad,
I passed this article on to many actors I know, who may have wondered about how to handle the situation when it arises. I've always advised them as your article does. Not only should they be comfortable and guilt free with their decision and not give in to intimidation or pressure, actors and directors should be aware that believability is important to the scene, and insecurity, discomfort and insincerity will read across the screen if the actor is not comfortable with intimacy as part of the role, the camera will pick it up, in the eyes, face, body language.
The scene from "Gone with the Wind" was a great example of the many scenes of passion, love and sensuality, that never required graphic acts of nudity, intimacy to tell the story.
