acting in europe

I'm looking to possibly break into European film acting. Living in the United States I have no idea where to begin. I speak some french, so I would love to start there. Any ideas how to get it moving...also any pitfalls to avoid...thanks!

Acting in Other Countries

Dear Illianni: This a good question, thanks for asking it. Many years ago I was in Australia and had met with a local casting director in Sydney. I was wanting to see what my chances were to work as an actor in Australia. What she told me made perfect sense. As there was not much filming in Australia (for numerous reasons) the local actors were the ones that received the roles when they did film. She then told me, that if they needed an American actor they would go to the US and get one. This is why so many of the really good Australian actors come here is that there are more projects for them to be involved in. Obviously, language would not have been a problem there for me had it worked out. Story time over. Reality: there are a lot of hurdles to overcome to work in Europe. With that said, First don't give up on your dream to work in Europe. As actors, I think we all dream of that. So pursue it with gusto. Second, you mentioned you spoke some French, it would be germane if you spoke fluent French. Third, if you are concentrating for France, learn the culture, how do you do that? You live there. Fourth, since Paris is the center for French anything, you should go online and research French casting directors, production companies, etc and start correspondence with them seeing what they recommend. A great scenerio is that you go there and start with extra work, get fluent in french, take acting lessons there, etc., learn the culture and go to auditions, get discovered and boom, you're leaving your dream. Nothing beats living there. Lastly, as you do more research, you will learn the pitfalls (as they are different for each of us) you will find the answers that will allow you to form your plan to act in Europe or lesser dream: concentrate on your career here which could get you working in Europe as well.... I hope this answer helps...
